THE MARCEL AND THE PTERODACTYLS' STORY

What the Dickens Is a Marcel & The Pterodactyls anyway?

Our History and Mission Statement:

Marcel & the Pterodactyls are an art-damaged, mirth-positive, Canadian-based shifting collective who have produced a dumpster of sounds and images, be they original works, recontextualized found recordings (a la Marcel Duchamp’s readymades) or in a grey zone somewhere in between.

Lo-Fi, low budget, low effort: these are all hallmarks of the Marcel sound and conceptual aesthetic. They are committed dilettantes, informedly absurd, and loose as stools.

Formed after a bonding trip to NYC in November of 1983, the Marcel oeuvre evolved from the strictly Duchampian readymade model of early releases through Marcel’s fully self-created pieces. Initially passed privately among those with similar predilections for questionable humour and plugged regularly on a variety of college radio stations in Canada and abroad, Marcel product has inchingly become more widely available through the years. We launched this Internet site in 2014 along with a YouTube Channel, Facebook, and an Instagram coming soon.

Throughout the past four decades, Marcel has applied its genre-expansive exploits to a wide variety of styles. From punk rock to classical, jazz to electronica, folk to show tunes and beyond, Marcel has dithered with them all.
The Marcel experience is part conceptual art, part prank, and part outright silliness.

This stuff and nonsense has resulted over 40 singles, 4 EPs, 7 music videos, 9 albums, and 7 compilations including the upcoming new releases Just Pathetic! The Best (?) of Marcel and the Pterodactyls 1983-2016 and Marcel’s first new single/song in 7 years, Dancing With An Angel. Give our groovy new disc a spin and hoof like mad on a wing and a prayer once we have it posted up. Howdy Doody!

Delighting some, irritating many, and ignored by most: it’s the Marcel way!
