THE 1980S

ROCK AND ROLL WITH MARCEL & THE PTERODACTYLS—LIVE IN ROME
December 1983
FOOLP001

Side One
Rock’n’Roll with the Pterodactyls

Side Two
What’s the Joke? / S&M / Chasing Young Maidens / The Sex Life of Marcel / Hungover / Michael Jackson’s Cats / I Think Someone’s Hungry / Close That Door! / Piano Concerto for Pterodactyl / Get the Oil / Whoops! / Raindrops Keep Falling On My Wings / Hey Mr. Snowman / (How D’ya Like My) Platform Shoes / It’s The Great Bumpkin

As with Marcel’s first single “Toto, I Don’t Think We’re In Kansas Anymore,” released one month prior to this debut album, Marcel wasted no time in setting the bar low when it came to long players as well as evidenced by this first 33 1/3 outing.

Rock & Roll with the Pterodactyls—Live in Rome! is neither live in Rome nor rock & roll.

Marcel’s full length debut was instead a Halloween-sound-affects readymade that catalogued the sounds that, massed, came together to sonically reflect a day in the life of Marcel: aural examinations of footwear, small accidents, Marcel’s sex life, and frequently pondering the role that Michael Jackson’s cats played in helping create his distinctive hairstyle. And so on.

Welcome to the Marcel experience: part conceptual art, part prank, and part outright silliness.

And welcome to life, life-long-suffering Fool Records/Recordings.

RIBOFLAVIN: THE BEST OF MARCEL & THE PTERODACTYLS
December 1984; Updated and Reissued August 1985
FOOLPCS002A

Side One
The Hi Song / The Sex Life of Marcel / Michael Jackson’s Cats (Live) / Piano Concert for Pterodactyl / Hungover / Rock & Roll Beauty Parlour / Three Stooges Theme / Lady Bump Dance Medley / Want A Cigarette? / Rock’n’Roll with the Pterodactyls (Edit)

Side Two
Pterodactyl Hop / The Ha Ha Song / What’s the Joke? / Brains, Hearts & Guts / This Is For Your Face / Modern Muzak 2 / Toto, I Don’t Think We’re In Kansas Anymore / You’re Getting On My Nerves You Scum Sucking Whore / That’s Bad / The ?’s Back / Pterodactyl Hop (Live) / Modern Muzak 3 / The Marcel Interview

Bonus Track: Modern Muzak (Live)

Marcel’s very own Hatful of Hollow, Riboflavin surveys the band’s first two years: A & B sides, live Rome album tracks, and some new numbers.

Riboflavin was one the first Marcel releases to be distributed a little bit more widely via the results of word of mouth. It remained their only real comp until Singles Going Unsteadily, 11 years later.

A.N.D. (ABSOLUTELY NO DINOSAURS)
July 1986
FOOLPCS003

Side One
Pterodactyl Punk / Betsy From Pike / Marcel Salutes Jazz & LSD / The Telephone Song / These Are The Things I Know / Pterodactyl Fertility Dance / Little Miss Overexcitable / Death of a Trumpet

Side Two
The Stranger with the Glowing, Purple, Disappearing Dildo / Pterodactyl Jig / A Pleasant Musical Interlude / Somebody Likes Me, Somebody Hates Me / One Blind Mouse / What Am I, Chopped Liver? / I Married You / The Landlord’s Daughter / There’s Nothing Funnier Than A Good Meal (Pts. 1 & 2) / Which Hurts More, My Fist or This 2x4?

Marcel’s second LP proper was a mildly distributed cassette that mixed new recontextualized readymades, some wholly original pieces such as both singles—the grating low-effort celtic harmonica of the “Pterodactyl Jig” and the Shirley-Temple-meets-Blind-Lemon-Jeffersonisms of “Somebody Like Me, Somebody Hates Me”—and other numbers falling somewhere in between.

Meanwhile, “call and response” number “Which Hurts More, My Fist or This 2x4?” remains a perennial Marcel favourite.

Steered by Pterodactyl Various Artists—henceforth holding down a UK base for Pterodactyl operations and creations—OWFO is a 90 minute aural collage compiled from material sourced from late 1980s UK radio and television broadcasts, edits from video of taped tv, and samples from a variety of Marcel & the Pterodactyls’ output and studio chatter.

It’s kids singing about mushy peas, BBC TV announcements, The Flintstones, and more.

This cassette-long aural collage can now be listened to as a media time capsule, surveying what was available within British media during the late ‘80s.

Side One
Crazy Dancing

Side Two
Pump Up the Strawberry Jam

Marcel’s second UK-created album and a second audio collage, pulling from similar and sometimes the same sources. This time it is named after the Pterodactyl who produced it. It is essentially Part Two of what was started on OWFO. Another fascinating time capsule.

THE 1990S

RAVE ON WITH MARCEL & THE PTERODACTYLS
January 1992
FOOLPCS006

Side One
Tinkering Disjoint / Pre-Tension / Weltschmerz / Puppet Dance / MOR Rave / Pterodactyl Rave

Side Two
Pterodactyl Rave On / La cathédrale de ptérodactyle / Maybe I Shouldn’t Have Had That Last One / Satie on the Settee / Fanfare for the Easy to Please / Typewriter Rave

After years of hitting the backburner, Marcel briefly flickered back to life during a time of retirement with this spontaneous recording made in the wee hours of January 1, 1992, welcoming the year ahead with a renewed Marcel, even if the reunion turned out to be just a tad premature.

This plinky-ponk low-rent techno and aimless noodling remains a curio in the Marcel canon: their one and only all-originally written, played and produced album. But is that a good thing? You’ll have to be the judge, but I don’t envy you.

Rave On with Marcel & the Pterodactyls is tedious, middle-of-the-night techno for those too obliterated to be in a position of being able to make a reasonable assessment of what they’re listening to anyway.

X-PLAY: THE REMIX COLLECTION OF MARCEL & THE PTERODACTYLS

The Various Artists Special Mix Up (Part Two) / Somebody Likes Me, Somebody Hates me (They Do Mix) / Care Free Days / Pterodactyl Hop (Goes On Forever Mix)

Marcel’s third UK work remixes a variety of previous material into new, irritation-magnified versions along with some all new tracks.

This presauged the full return of Marcel the following year, spearheading an exciting new genre ...

MUMBLE & HUM
June 1995
FOOLPCS008

Side One
We Wanna Be Happy / Xtllinzbr / Violin Concerto from “Le pterodactyl de pathetique” / Day By Day / Summer Lovin’/Greased Lightning / ABC / KU Rappinghood / Cerebral Hemorrhage

Side Two
Strike Up the Band / Rock & Roll Frankenstein / The Lord Is My Pterodactyl / Main Aria from “Le pterodactyl de pathetique” / We’re All Going to the Family Reunion—We’re Going Swimming / Crazy Horses / The Cerebral Plains of Aesthetic Ascension / We’re Going to the Graduation / 1972

In 1995 Marcel re-emerged, launching their latest approach to sounds via what they termed as “Mumble Rock.” Marcel described this genre as “a post-grunge, low-achievement sensation of mumbling possible lyrics with a demeanour of casual yet pleasant detachment.”

Think: half-conscious singing in the shower first thing in the morning before last night’s Ambien and scotch combo have yet to fully wear off, or unconsciously, distractedly singy-mumbling—in a barely audible tone—a melody that sorta pops into your head while walking down the street.”

Mumble & Hum is where Marcel launched their new style and sound even if not every track on the album was in the Mumble style. Again, it was a mix of readymades/originals/intersections.

Marcel further broaden their stylistic canvas as Mumble & Hum runs a gamut of genres including gospel, folk, Jazz, show tunes, electronic, classical, rap, psychedelia, pop, and collage.

Marcel’s first 12 years of releasing singles compiled a la the Buzzcocks’ Singles Going Steady: the A sides first and then the corresponding B sides on the flip. Probably the most distributed Marcel product prior to the upcoming Just Pathetic reissue.

A two-hour special aired on the University of Toronto’s campus station, CIUT, highlighting the band’s career and playing highlights from the new compilation release.

The Pterodactyls are a festive sort, having released a number of Christmas singles over the previous dozen years. 1995's A Different Kind of Christmas collects them along with some reasonably season-specific numbers along with two great new Marcel Seasonal songs: “Jingle Bells-Have A Merry Merry Merry Merry Christmas” and a headache-inducing “Winter Wonderland.”

Once again, Marcel presents music in a wide variety of styles, all receiving the Marcel pathetic touch.

Side Three
Christmas (Part One)

Side Four
Christmas (Part Two)

Marcel’s first all-original album is a 60 minute double LP. affair, there to spread the Christmas spirit via songs about.

The thesis behind Christmas Tree Fire is that Christmas often isn’t anywhere near as smooth sailing and happy as it’s always supposed to be, and this album responds with Christmas music that reflects the more reality-and-annoyance-based aspect of Clausfest.

Yeah, the Christmas trees are sung about here but there’s also nightmarish Santa Claus parades; the traffic jams of getting out from the parades and the shopping; people slipping into depressions and considering suicide; the backlog of housework and laundry that accumulates putting a huge stressor on things; the downright creepy moments from drunken mall santas to office parties with people you can’t stand; and the cold, sharp right turn that follows the return to the real world once it’s all over and the tree has become a fire hazard ... Christmas Tree Fire speaks to that kind of yuletide season.

The album’s particularly cheery second half is simply Marcel chanting the word “Christmas” over and over with a variety of intonations for a half hour. Wishing you the best of the season as we hypnotize you into the Marcel Christmas cult.

PRE-HISTORIC MAYHEM

FOOLPCS013

Side One

Side Two
Enraged Psychological Figure / To Nowhere & Beyond / We Don’t Sell T-Shirts / Sour Lemon / Jack Benimble-Sheep Medley / Slippery / We Wanna Be Happy (Revisited) / New Scrabble Game

The lowest of the lo fi Marcel releases is another dense cram of original material, readymades and more. Marcel regressed just before hitting the pause button on their output for the next while.

As of 1999, Pre-Historic Mayhem remains the last original Marcel album. But it won’t be the last.
